From the chapter secretary&#8217;s report of January 6, 1906, Miss Bickford reports that Robert McArthur was willing for the chapter to place a tablet on the wall of the Laconia Counting Room. The marker would be placed opposite Emery Lane, now known as Emery Street. This marked the area where &#8220;The Old Stone Fort,&#8221; also known as the &#8220;Major Philips Block House,&#8221; was located. The garrison, or sometimes called fort, was used to store supplies and house men for &#8220;Fort Mary.&#8221; It also served as a refuge from the Indians.<\/p>\n<p>The marker reads:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;A STONE FORT<br \/>\nWAS BUILT IN 1693, REAR OF THIS<br \/>\nPLACE NEAR THE BANKS OF THE SACO<br \/>\nRIVER, AS A REFUGE FROM THE INDIANS.<br \/>\nTHIS MEMORIAL PLACED HERE BY THE<br \/>\nREBECCA EMERY CHAPTER<br \/>\nDAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION.<br \/>\n1907.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The marker has been partially cleaned and lowered on building for better visibility.
