It is one of the three oldest churches in Maine.  The chapter placed a marker in 1936.<br \/>\nThe Old Walpole Meetinghouse was built that year on land given by John Thomas; the builder believed to have been Samuel Woodward, a shipwright from Scituate, Massachusetts who later moved to Bristol.
